Privacy Policy

I. Introduction

Your privacy on the Internet is of the utmost importance to us. Because we gather certain types of information about the users of the World Bank's sites and services, we want to ensure that you fully understand the terms and conditions surrounding the capture and use of that information. This privacy statement discloses what information we gather and how we use it. This privacy policy applies to all World Bank sites - that is all sites within the "worldbank.org" domain name.

II. What Information Does the World Bank Collect?

Personal information
If you register for an email newsletter, buy a book, post to a blog or join a discussion group, you may be asked for information that helps to identify you, such as your name, email address, and organization. The information you are asked to provide is used for technical and customer administration of the site only and is not shared with third parties.

If you have ordered a publication or made other purchases online, the Bank uses a contractual fulfillment vendor to process and ship orders, and a credit card processing service to bill users. These companies do not retain, share, store or use identification information for any secondary purposes. These parties are not allowed to use such information except for the purpose of providing these services.

Non-personally identifiable information
The World Bank has and will continue to contract with third-party vendors to track and analyze information about the usage of World Bank sites. This information is gathered so that the World Bank can better understand the usage of its sites and improve and develop them. None of this information can be used to identify individual site visitors. All vendors that the Bank works with have their own privacy policies that include clauses that they will not share Bank data with third parties unless specifically requested to do so by the Bank or as directed by law. All data collected by third party vendors is owned by the World Bank, and the World Bank will not share, sell, distribute or rent this information to anyone.

Only summaries of visitors’ behavior are produced. Examples of this type of information include statistics on most popular and least popular pages. The information collected cannot be traced back to a particular individual.

The purpose of this data collection is so that the World Bank can better understand the preferences of its visitors and improve its site and services. This information is never connected with any personal information you supply to us if you register on our website.

Use of cookies and web beacons
When you register for one of our services, the World Bank sets a cookie, a small bit of code stored on your computer's hard drive that enables you to manage your subscriptions and online profile. By setting this cookie, the World Bank will remember you the next time you visit and won't have to bother you by asking questions you have already answered (like address information).

You are always free to decline cookies if your browser permits, although in that case you may not be able to use certain features on the site and may be required to re-enter information more frequently to use certain services on the website.

IP Addresses
In addition, the World Bank also records your IP address, which is the Internet address of your computer, and information such as your browser type and operating system. This information helps us learn about the geographical distribution of our website visitors and the technology they use to access our site.

Children's privacy
The World Bank operates Youthink!, a website that provides information on global issues that matter to today's youth.

To participate in the discussion forums, users are required to disclose their name and email address. This information is not used for commercial purposes, is not shared with third parties and is only used for site administration. Parents have the right to request removal of any personal information provided by their children. To remove information about their children from Bank systems, parents can send an email to the feedback@worldbank.org with the full name and age of the child, where the child is registered, and a statement that the sender is the child's parent or legal guardian.

III. What If I Don't Want to Share My Information?

Registering on our site is optional. If you choose not to register or provide personal information, you can still use the World Bank's web site. However, you will not be able to purchase items or receive email newsletters.

If you register for a newsletter, post to a blog, or contribute to a forum, consultation, or conference the Bank will not share, sell, distribute or rent your information to anyone. On an occasional basis, and with your specific authorization, the Bank may share your mailing address information if you enter into a transaction on our Publications. Your information will only be shared if you indicate that you would like to receive information from UN agencies, multilateral banks or international organizations. Your e-mail address will never be shared with any outside party for marketing purposes and will be kept strictly confidential.

IV. Security

The World Bank Group employs a range of technologies to protect the information maintained on our systems from loss, misuse, unauthorized access or disclosure, alteration, or destruction.

V. How to Contact Us

Glossary

Cookie: A cookie is a small amount of data, which often includes an anonymous unique identifier that is sent to your browser from a website's computers and stored on your computer's hard drive. Each web site can send its own cookie to your browser if your browser's preferences allow it, but (to protect your privacy) your browser only permits a website to access the cookies it has already sent to you, not the cookies sent to you by other sites. Once the user has closed the browser the cookie will no longer be accessed during that session.

Demographic Information: This may include your gender, age, postal code, interests, and other information you provide to us voluntarily. We use this information to provide you with personalized services and to analyze trends to ensure the information provided by the sites meets your needs. For example, we could offer personalized News or reminders about upcoming events if you tell us which programs and topics you're interested in.

IP Address: When your web browser or email application requests a web page or email from another computer on the Internet, it automatically gives that computer the address where it should send the information. This is called your computer's "IP address." (IP stands for "Internet protocol.") For many users accessing the Internet from a dial-up Internet service provider (ISP), the IP address will be different every time you log on. The World Bank does this to learn about the geographical make-up of its web site traffic.

Web Beacons: Also known as "clear gifs," "web bugs" or "pixel tags," these are tiny graphics with a unique identifier, similar in function to cookies, and are used to allow us to count users who have visited certain pages and to help determine the effectiveness of promotional or advertising campaigns. When used in HTML-formatted email messages, web beacons can tell the sender whether and when the email has been opened. In contrast to cookies, which are stored on a user's computer hard drive, web beacons are embedded invisibly on Web pages.

Scams and Fraudulent Investment Schemes That Misuse Our Name

  • Should individuals and businesses look out for fraudulent investment scams that misuse the World Bank's name?

Yes, individuals and businesses should take care not to fall victim to investment scams, known as Advance Fee Fraud schemes. Some of these schemes misuse our name or falsely claim to be affiliated with the World Bank Group.

Many scams, known as Advance Fee Fraud schemes, originate in Nigeria and are known as "Nigerian scams" or "4-1-9" letters after the section of the Nigerian penal code that deals with this type of fraud. Other fraud schemes have originated in Cote d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone.

Police estimate that thousands of these solicitations are sent by fax or email every week and are addressed to individuals and companies around the world. Only a very small fraction actually involves the use of the Bank's name.

Recently, two new fraudulent schemes have surfaced in South Africa. These involve solicitations to open a personal bank account at the Bank, which is not a commercial bank, as well as telephone messages left by perpetrators notifying potential victims that they have won money that can be redeemed at the World Bank.

  • What forms do these fraudulent schemes take?

We've seen increased use of sophisticated forms and letterhead to send what appears to be legitimate World Bank Group correspondence, as well as several schemes that reference the Bank. Also, scam artists sometimes falsely represent themselves as Bank auditors or members of the Bank West African Regional Delegation.

Recently, correspondence was sent by fax to creditors of West African governments, claiming that the senders were empowered by these governments to repay past debts. Official-looking Bank letterhead was used.

Typically, the solicitations asked potential victims to provide personal information such as signatures or bank account information, and to pay certain advance fees, often described as "processing fees." In return, the potential victim was promised sums of money that the person soliciting the "fees" had no intention of paying. In some cases, those seeking the funds used the names of actual Bank staff members to sign the letters in order to bolster their credibility.

Here's an example of such a scam using official-looking Bank letterhead and signature. See example (pdf).

In South Africa, one new scheme involves notification in a message left on a cell phone that the recipient has won money to be paid by the Bank. The message directs the person to call a certain number to arrange payment. This scam was uncovered when the potential victim arrived at a Bank office in country seeking payment, because the telephone number in another country, which was left on the person’s cell phone, fortunately failed to connect.

View an example (pdf) of this type of personal banking scheme.

We have no involvement in such schemes, and we caution the public to be very wary of these and other similar solicitations that falsely claim to be affiliated with the Bank or any member of the World Bank Group.

  • What should you do if you receive suspicious notifications about winning money to be paid by the Bank; faxes, emails, or other correspondence involving requests for money transfers or payments that reference the Bank or any member of the World Bank Group; or solicitations to open a personal bank account at the Bank?

If you receive what seems to be an unusual money request from person(s) representing to be members of the World Bank Group, or have concerns as to the authenticity of the World Bank Group's actual involvement in a particular transaction, solicitation, notification, directive or request, do NOT respond to the request and do NOT send any money or provide any of your personal bank account details.

If you would like to verify whether any particular individual is a World Bank employee, please contact the World Bank's Human Resources Service Center at 202-473-2222 or hrservicecenter@worldbank.org The HR Service Center provides employment verification for World Bank employees.

See the Integrity Vice Presidency website.

  • Fraudulent job postings and offers: What should you do if you receive a suspicious notification about a job posting or offer from the World Bank Group asking you to send money as part of the recruitment process?

There is a worldwide scheme involving fraudulent job postings and offers purporting to be from or associated with the World Bank Group. The scheme is used to falsely obtain money and/or personal information.

The World Bank Group does not request any amount of money as part of its recruitment process.

Official communication from the World Bank Group will always come from emails ending in either @worldbank.org or @ifc.org. If you believe that you are a potential victim of a fraudulent job offer, please forward any related information you have received to abuse@worldbank.org.

Terms of Use Open Knowledge Repository

Description

The World Bank supports the free online communication and exchange of knowledge as the most effective way of ensuring that the fruits of research, economic and sector work, and development practice are made widely available, read, and built upon. It is therefore committed to open access, which, for authors, enables the widest possible dissemination of their findings and, for researchers, readers, and users, increases their ability to discover pertinent information. To learn more about our Open Knowledge Repository (OKR) please visit our About page.

Intellectual Property Rights - Licenses

You are encouraged to use the OKR to benefit yourself and others in creative ways. By using this website and any of the materials made available through it (the “Works”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use for OKR.

The World Bank allows you to use the Works, subject to your compliance with certain license terms, but still retains the copyright to all of the Works in the OKR, unless specifically noted to the contrary.

The majority of Works in the OKR are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY 3.0 IGO)

Some Works within the OKR are not subject to the CC BY license, but are available under other terms. Such Works will be clearly labeled with the specific license terms under which those Works may be used.

Third Party Content

In general, no matter what license applies to each particular Work, The World Bank does not necessarily own each component of the content included in the Works. The World Bank therefore does not warrant that the use of any third-party-owned individual component or part contained in the OKR will not infringe on the rights of third parties. The risk of claims resulting from such infringement rests solely with you. If you wish to re-use a component of the Work, it is your responsibility to determine whether permission is needed for that re-use and to obtain permission from the copyright owner.

Attribution

Regardless of any other license terms governing the use of a Work, any use of the OKR Works or their content must be attributed to The World Bank and its content providers with a copyright notice in the following format:

[Authors*]. [Year of publication]. [Title**]. © [Publisher***]. [OKR handle URI] License: [License****]

*Semi-colon separated if more than one author. Standardized as [last name], [first name], [middle name]

**Italics
